How to remove the background from a photo
- Click the yellow area and pick your photo, or drag the file onto the page. You can also paste with Ctrl+V.
- Wait for the AI to work. The first time, the page downloads the artificial intelligence model (about 44 MB); after that it’s kept in your browser.
- If needed, fine-tune the cut-out with the sliders or the touch-up brush (see below).
- Choose the background: Transparent, a color, or Blurred (the photo itself, blurred, like a phone’s portrait mode).
- Click Download image. To keep the transparency, leave the format on PNG.
Tick Show original at any time to compare with the photo before.
What it’s for
- Product photos for online stores, marketplaces and catalogs, with a clean white background.
- Profile pictures for LinkedIn, WhatsApp and résumés, with a plain or blurred background.
- Stickers and collages: a transparent PNG can be placed on any image, slide or design.
- ID photos when the background isn’t white (then set the size with the passport photo maker tool).
Your photo never leaves your device
Most background removal sites upload your photo to a server. Here, the artificial intelligence runs inside your browser: the photo is analyzed on your computer or phone and is never uploaded. The only thing downloaded is the AI model, which is the same for everyone and is kept for next time. No sign-up, no watermark and no photo limit. The image comes out at its original resolution, not a shrunken preview.
Tips for a cleaner cut-out
- Contrast helps: the person or object should stand out from the background. White clothes against a white wall is the hardest case.
- One main subject: the AI looks for the most prominent element. In photos with many people or scattered objects, some may be left out.
- Good light: strong shadows behind the subject sometimes become part of the cut-out.
- Hair and fur are the hardest part. Loose strands may end up slightly transparent or keep a bit of the background.
How to fine-tune the cut-out
Sometimes the AI is unsure, for example about a blanket, an object the person is holding or loose hair. Those parts end up half transparent. After the cut-out, the adjustments on the side change the result instantly, without waiting for the AI again:
- Sensitivity: raise it to keep the parts the AI was unsure about (the blanket comes back whole) or lower it to remove them completely.
- Edge softness: 100 is the edge the AI produced. Lower it for a crisp edge, which usually looks better on products and objects.
- Shrink / expand edge: negative values remove the thin outline of the old background color; positive values recover fingertips, ears or hair that got cut off.
- Remove loose bits: clears small specks left far from the person or object.
- Touch-up brush: choose Erase or Restore and paint over the photo to fix exactly what you want. With the brush on, removed areas show faintly so you can see what can be brought back. Undo (or Ctrl+Z) reverts the last stroke.
Why does it take a few seconds?
The model analyzes your photo at high resolution using your own device’s processor instead of a server full of graphics cards. On a typical computer it takes 10 to 30 seconds; simpler phones may take a little longer. In exchange, your photo stays with you.
Frequently asked questions
Is it really free?
Yes. There’s no paid plan, no credits per photo and no watermark.
Does photo quality drop?
No. The cut-out is applied to the photo at its original resolution (up to 16 megapixels).
Does it work on my phone?
Yes, on recent phones with an up-to-date Chrome or Safari. The first time, use Wi-Fi if you can because of the model download.
Does it work with iPhone (HEIC) photos?
Yes. The photo is converted automatically before the cut-out. To just convert it, use HEIC to JPG.
How do I put the cut-out in an Instagram post?
Download it with a color or blurred background, then use crop image for social media to get the right size.
